Learn Our Process

A gold testing stone is one of the tools we use to help verify the karat of your jewelry. The piece is gently rubbed against a testing stone to create a small streak, which is then tested with specific acids. The reaction helps identify whether the jewelry is 10k or 14k.
This test, combined with other methods when needed, helps us accurately evaluate your gold and offer you a fair price. Knowledge, transparency, and proper testing matter when selling your gold.
To ensure every customer receives a fair and accurate offer, we also use advanced X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) technology to verify stone results. An XRF analyzer is a non-destructive testing device that measures the elemental composition of your gold without scratching, cutting, or damaging your jewelry.
During the evaluation, the XRF gun scans the item and identifies the percentages of gold and other metals present in the piece. This allows us to accurately determine the purity (such as 10K, 14K, 18K, or higher), helping us calculate its value based on current precious metal market prices.
Using XRF technology provides several benefits:
-
Fair and transparent pricing by measuring the actual metal content rather than relying solely on stamps or visual inspection.
-
Non-destructive testing, meaning your jewelry remains intact throughout the evaluation.
-
Greater accuracy, even when hallmarks are worn, missing, or potentially misleading.
While no testing method is perfect in every situation, XRF analysis is one of the most trusted technologies in the precious metals industry. When necessary, and with your consent, our trained professionals may also perform additional verification methods to confirm results, ensuring you receive an honest, competitive, and equitable offer for your gold.
Our commitment is simple: every evaluation is performed with accuracy, transparency, and integrity so you can feel confident you're receiving a fair assessment of your valuables.

How to Tell If Your Jewelry May Be Gold
Not sure if your jewelry is genuine gold? Before bringing your piece in for a professional evaluation, there are a few simple indicators you can check at home.
Check With a Magnet
Gold is not magnetic, so genuine gold jewelry should not be strongly attracted to a magnet. If the jewelry itself is attracted to a magnet, it may contain magnetic metals such as iron, nickel, or steel.
However, don't be concerned if only the clasp reacts to the magnet. Jewelry clasps and other components may contain different metals, even when the primary piece is made of genuine gold. Test the main body of the jewelry separately from the clasp whenever possible.
Look for a Purity Mark
Most gold jewelry is stamped with a mark indicating its gold purity. Common markings include:
10K • 14K • 18K • 22K • 750 • .999
These markings are often found in discreet locations, such as:
-
The clasp of a necklace or bracelet
-
The back of an earring
-
The bail of a pendant
-
The inside of a ring band
The karat designation indicates the proportion of pure gold in the piece. For example, 14K gold contains approximately 58.5% (may be indicated as 585) pure gold, while 18K gold contains approximately 75% pure gold (may be indicated as 750).
The exact meaning of a marking can vary depending on the piece and how it was manufactured. A stamp alone should not be considered conclusive proof of the jewelry's composition, as markings can sometimes be inaccurate, altered, or misleading.
Is Your Jewelry Gold Plated?
Some jewelry has a thin layer of gold applied over another metal. This is known as gold-plated or gold-coated jewelry and is different from solid gold. Because gold-plated jewelry contains only a thin layer of gold over another metal, we do not purchase gold-plated items.
Look for markings that may indicate plating or another type of gold application, including:
Gold Plate (GP) • Overlay • Gold Filled (GF) • 1/20
When in Doubt, Have It Professionally Tested
Have questions about your jewelry? Bring it to Most Paid For Gold for a professional evaluation. Our team can test your jewelry, identify its precious-metal content, and help you understand what you have before making a decision to sell.
Does Most Paid For Gold Buy Coins?
We do not pay a premium for the collectible value of coins. Our appraisals are based solely on the weight of precious metals including gold and silver.
